Car shortages worldwide have been attributed to supply chain management, COVID-19 closing down production lines, shipping problems, and a lack of certain semiconductor chips from Ukraine.
The current average wait time for buying a new car in Australia is 159 days.
Prices for new cars have gone up by 10 per cent to 20 per cent in general since the pandemic started triggering many of the problems. Used car prices have followed behind and stories abound like, “I just sold my 2-year-old Nissan Navarra Ute for more than I paid for it new.”
Despite the problems, new car spending in Australia rose by 13.3% according to the Commonwealth Bank data for August. Apparently, it was a massive month for cars arriving that had been pre-ordered many months ago.
Here’s an update on how the new car supply situation stands for a wide range of popular models, according to Price My Car (data at the end of August):

Meanwhile, the very first 2022 Tesla Model Y goes to auction on Monday, 3 October 2022 and is fully expected to sell for more than the retail price.
The Model Y is metallic grey and the full manufacturer’s warranty is included.
“With wait times on the Tesla Model Y being anywhere from 9 to 18 months, this is the perfect opportunity to get your hands on an electric vehicle now and skip the lengthy wait times,” said Mr. Lee Hames, Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions.
